Monmouthshire nursing home helps foodbank to make Christmas special

Gibraltar Nursing Home partnered with the Monmouth and District Foodbank to support individuals, couples, and families throughout the Christmas period

Among those Britons who celebrate Christmas, nearly two-thirds are worried about how the cost-of-living crisis will affect them or their friends and families, according to new research from Amnesty International UK and Savanta.

Accordingly, during this festive season, Gibraltar Nursing Home partnered with the Monmouth and District Foodbank to support individuals, couples, and families throughout the Christmas period. The initiative received remarkable support from friends of the home and the wider community.

During November, the home became an official drop-off point for the charity. A dedicated donation area was set up in the reception, along with a list of essential and festive items requested by the foodbank. The response was overwhelming, with generous contributions quickly filling the collection basket.

The care home team delivered the donations,, which filled the boot of the home’s car and weighed a total of 30kg, to foodbank organiser Martin Howlett at the Baptist Church in Monmouth.

Martin expressed his heartfelt thanks for the donations and to everyone who donated. He said: “Through their generosity, they have helped change someone's life this winter.”

The success of this year’s drive has inspired Gibraltar Nursing Home to extend their support. The home has offered to continue collecting donations throughout 2026 during seasonal periods such as Easter – especially as the foodbank has seen increased demand following the Monmouthshire floods.

Commenting on the initiative, Verity, Gibraltar Nursing Home’s manager, said: ‘We’ve been honoured to support a charity that has helped so many in our community. These initiatives bring everyone together for a truly meaningful cause. And we’re so glad to be part of the effort to make Christmas magical for those in need.”
