Care charity partners with food hall to reduce waste

Care provider Harrogate Neighbours has joined forces with a family-owned food hall to reduce waste.

The provider will be working with Harrogate-based Crimple to combat the growing amount of food waste in the UK. It will give the charity surplus food from across its site every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, helping the charity reduce costs and use local produce.

Its chief executive, and national chair of the National Association of Care Catering, Sue Cawthray, says: "I believe that food waste is avoidable if managed in the right way. Exploring opportunities on a grass roots level between the hospitality industry and other food services and not-for-profit organisations, such as Harrogate Neighbours, which provides a daily hot meal delivery service into the community, may be a good place to start.”

Alongside providing food donations, the Crimple team will volunteer their time with the Harrogate and Ripon Food Angels, which provides meals on wheels services to the local community. It prepares over 100 meals every day.

In February, chefs and the community marked 10 years of Harrogate and Ripon Food Angels.
