Aria Care introduces Aqua Burst Hydration Sweets

In order to support Nutrition and Hydration Week, Aria Care’s hospitality team has developed Aqua Burst, a range of delicious vitamin-packed sugar-free sweets to support residents’ hydration across its 67 communities.

James Clear, Aria’s hospitality director, who is pictured above, explains: “We are always looking for ways to innovate and improve the quality of our residents’ wellbeing. Hydration plays a fundamental role in our energy levels, cognition and sleep. Even mild dehydration can impact our mood.

“It’s the foundation of health and in line with our ‘personalised care’ we strive to present residents with variety and choice wherever possible. A few sweets between mealtimes are an enjoyable and easy way of boosting hydration levels and can really make a difference.

The recipe is being kept a secret for now but is based on Aria’s partner WaterADE’s fruit flavoured drinks which are available throughout Aria’s communities.”

Studies suggest that the elderly are 20-30% more prone to dehydration*. There is a general reduction in thirst sensation with age, while medication can prevent absorption of water into the body or, in the case of diuretics, act to remove excess wate, further compounding the problem. For those with dementia, one of the symptoms of cognitive impairment is a reduction in an individual’s ability to recognise that they are thirsty; putting this group at a significantly higher risk of dehydration.

Aria’s hydration policy and practice is well-established and colleagues are highly trained on the importance of hydration with practical initiatives, including making drinks visually appealing with fruit and herb infused waters and eight flavours of WaterADE being consistently available and offered at regular intervals.
