Home creates Kosher-style menu with local deli
A Chigwell care home has designed a Kosher-style menu in response to demand from residents.
Lambwood Heights Care Home has introduced a Kosher-style menu supplied by the same long-standing Jewish deli that many residents used to shop at to feed their young families.
Head chef Kamila Sroka was keen to expand the choice available to residents, especially for those who follow a Kosher diet. By speaking to the families and local Jewish community groups she devised a menu and invited residents to put it to the test.
She says: “Finding a supplier was a challenge for us in the kitchen but we consulted the residents and their families and they directed us to a Kosher deli ‘La Boucherie Kosher Ltd’ in nearby Barkingside that many had used for generations. We were able to source nearly everything we needed at the store for the menu to be a success.
“I knew we had some residents on a Kosher diet so my team and I asked them what they would like to see on offer in our bistro and what other traditional items they would like to see on the menu.
“From this we created a range of different style options including matzah ball Soup, latkes, bazargan and a hot deli sandwich selection. We invited resident Madeline Brandman, 98, to give her verdict and I’m pleased to say she was very impressed."
Madeline says: “I love my food and it is wonderful to have all my old favourites on offer here, from the very same shop I relied on as a busy mum of 11. The best part is that I get to share all these traditional delicacies with new friends – some who have never tried Kosher food before.
“I’m pleased to say everyone has enjoyed it so far – even if it does mean putting on a few pounds! I used the same deli to shop for my family many years ago when my children were young. Food is a great way to bring people together – I always loved hosting special occasions and that relied upon serving good food – now the staff here are helping us continue this lovely tradition.”
