Edenmore Nursing Home opens vintage sweet shop

Located in the home’s main hallway, the shop has also become a destination for social interactions, as residents discuss the relative merits of each selection!

A North Devon nursing home recently unveiled its take on a vintage themed sweet shop, a move that has helped to bring team members, residents and their families who have a sweet tooth together.

The Edenmore Nursing Home in Ilfracombe, which uses as its ethos A Journey Paved by the Past, has reflected this in the new addition to its facilities. This has been designed to help residents experience a sense of familiarity, while also evoking feelings of nostalgia and comfort, as the sight, smell, and touch of the treats connect them to happy moments from their earlier years.

“We created the sweet shop as lots of our family members regularly ask to go to the shop in town” explains the home’s registered manager, Gayle Cooper. She continues: “With the guidance of our care team, we describe the colours and flavours of the sweets, but also promote independence by encouraging residents to make their own choices.”

There are further plans to add a retro cash register and scales to further complement the vintage theme.

Located in the home’s main hallway, where it is easily accessible to all, the shop has also become a destination for social interactions, as residents share their memories and discuss the relative merits of each selection!
